Lagos, Portugal Day 5

This morning, we are exploring the area around Sagres, Portugal before it gets too hot. The ‘boys,’ are jet skiing at 2 pm.

SAGRES

Sagres is a town best known for its coastal cliffs, beautiful beaches, and historical significance.it is located on the southwest corner of Portugal about 40 minutes west of Lagos.

Here is a brief history of Sagres:

  1. Early History: Sagres has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological evidence suggesting human presence dating back to the Paleolithic era. It was later settled by various civilizations, including the Phoenicians and Romans.
  2. Prince Henry the Navigator: One of the most significant figures in Sagres’ history is Prince Henry the Navigator, a member of the Portuguese royal family who established a school of navigation in Sagres in the 15th century. This school played a crucial role in advancing the Age of Discovery, as Portuguese explorers learned navigation techniques and embarked on voyages of exploration that ultimately led to the discovery of new lands, such as Brazil and the Cape of Good Hope.
  3. Fortress of Sagres: The town is also home to the Fortress of Sagres, a historic fortification that played a strategic role in defending the region from invasions. Built in the 15th century, the fortress offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline and is a popular tourist attraction.
  4. Maritime Heritage: Sagres has a rich maritime heritage, with its location on the southwestern tip of Portugal making it a crucial port for maritime trade and exploration. The town’s history is closely linked to the sea, with fishing and seafaring playing important roles in its economy and culture.

Sagres’ location dictated what many would believe it to be, the end of the world. The small settlement sits at Europe’s most southwesterly point. In the ancient world, it was the last explored point. For this reason the Romans called Sagres the Promontorium Sacrum, otherwise the end of the world.

After visiting Sagres and shopping for pottery, we arrived at Playa Luz just in time for the jet skiing. The rest of us headed to the same restaurantfor lunch  we occupied yesterday.

The jet skiing was declared a great success! it’s hot, we need to go dunk at least our feet in the water at this beach.

We did spend an hour on the beach. All I did was indeed get my feet wet. Tonight will be another family night of tapas style snacks. Just finished a dip in the pool.

A few clouds for the first time give us a bit of a sunset.
