A trip to Sintra and Caiscais
Today we took a small day tour of 6 people only to Sintra and the famous Pena Palace, Cabo de la Roca, the most eastern point in Europe and the beach area of Cascais.
PENA PALACE
The palace is perched on top of a hill overlooking the town of Sintra and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The Pena Palace was built by King Ferdinand II of Portugal in the 19th century. He commissioned the construction of the palace as a Romanticist summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. King Ferdinand II wanted to create a fairy-tale castle that would blend in with the surrounding natural landscape of the Sintra mountains and showcase various architectural styles, including Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Renaissance, and Neo-Islamic elements.
The construction of the palace began in 1842 as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. The palace was built on the ruins of an old monastery and was designed by the German architect Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege.
The result is the colorful and eclectic Pena Palace, which has since become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the 7 wonders of Portugal, a popular tourist destination.
The interior of the palace is equally impressive, with ornately decorated rooms, intricate tile work, and stunning furnishings.
The Pena Palace is surrounded by a large park that features lush gardens, winding pathways, and hidden grottos.

Saturday, the train to Faro and Family
On Saturday, day 4, we took the train south to Faro, where we met our daughter, husband and grandson for a week of swimming, tourism and relaxation in Lagos. We rented a beautiful little villa at the top of a hill overlooking the beach and the town.
