Day 38: Pinware Privincial Park

Today is a ‘rest day’. We are just biding time until we can get the ferry tomorrow. However we have household chores to do anyway, and this is as good a place as any to do them. We don’t have services here, i.e., no electrical, so baking is out of the question. I can do that when we get to St. Barbe tomorrow, along with laundry (where I last did it).

But the van needs a good cleaning, especially the windows and areas we don’t get to every day. We do keep the van tidy at all times. The mats get shaken daily, and the floor washed regularly. The bathroom as well I clean thoroughly most days if not every day. But sometimes we need to take everything apart, repack, and take stock of food supplies. We have been spending a lot of time inside due to the weather. I try to find different ways to change it up.

Today’s attempt at a change up. We’re going to be here most of today. Maybe a cozy place for a late afternoon movie.

At breakfast, we finished the last of the homemade bread I brought with me. We still have 4 brownies left. I think I planned that rather well.

For those of you who are sweltering at home, we had the heater on this morning, and I am wearing a sweatshirt.

After chores and showers, we set off to explore this area and see if there is anything we missed on the way north. We drive down to L’Anse au Loup (Wolf Cove). Originally settled by the French, historically, it was not only a fishing village, but also a seal hunting region. Seal in French is ‘loup marin’ literally sea wolf). Today, L’Anse au Loup is still very much a fishing village although it’s the largest of 19 communities in southern Labrador.  No tourism. We walked around the harbor and watched some fishing activity.

Three boats working together. One is scooping up fish in a net. It’s only taking them a few minutes per scoop. Wonder what they are catching?

The sun has come out and it’s windy. We drove back to the park and had a picnic lunch of leftovers at the picnic area, which is much less buggy than our campsite. We spent a quiet afternoon.

We are having our pre-dinner drinks tonight with iceberg ice given to us the other night. When was this ice last in its liquid form?

Local fashion apparel for black flies. All the best Labradorans are wearing  these. Now. How does he eat/ drink?

It has turned out to be a lovely evening if you can ignore the local residents. I am wearing a sweatshirt with the hood pulled tight around my head. The Thermocells are putting on a valiant battle. We so badly want to sit outside. You ask, why do you not have the bug tent up? It’s supposed to rain later.

Anyway, iceberg drinks in hand, bug nets in place, thermocells pumping out repellent smoke,  nice piano music.. looking good.

Brian found a car wash between here and the ferry terminal tomorrow. The front of the van looks like an entomology experiment gone wrong.

BBQ ribs, potatoes, raw vegetables and dip for dinner. We have a zoom call set up  with friends at home tonight. They’ve been away too in far flung places (Alaska photographing bears) so we are anxious to talk.

We had guests for dinner. There were 2 of them.
