Day 29: Notre Dame PP to Little Bay

We are now being blessed with heat and sunshine. We will gratefully take this while we can. It was a gorgeous evening last night. Thanks to the weather and the tent, we sat outside until about 10:30 am. We could leave the tent out all night. Something we rarely do.  It’s not a rain tent and we usually have to take it down before bedtime.

I am missing my usual get-out-of-bed and walk 3000 steps, and my body is complaining about it. We have decided now to make the effort of walking after breakfast and before we start driving for the day. We did that this morning, and it really helped get things moving.

Today is a short drive, an explore all the nooks and crannies day. I’ll just post photos with explanations. There is nothing of great historical interest, just scenery.

We stopped in Springdale along the way for some photos. On the way out of town I spotted a fabric shop which of course necessitated a stop… and a purchase.

Our final destination is Little Bay, population 100. There is a village run RV park for 4 units on the beach with a stunning view down Little Bay. Yesterday, there were whales and capelins in the bay viewable from the campsite. Not today.

Little Bay was a copper mining town in days gone past 1878 to 1900, the Eldorado of Newfoundland. The ore was shipped to Wales for processing until they could build their own extractors etc. The drop in the price of copper in the early 1900s and a town fire put an end to it all. There is no fishing here.

How about this for a back door view!

It’s warm and windy and there are no bugs (yeay). I haven’t been able to get to laundry yet. I took advantage of the wind and heat to do some hand washing. Everything dried in an hour. I still had enough of the domestic whim left in me to bake some cookies. We were down to 2 left from those I brought from home.

Lunch was in our campsite as will be dinner. No restaurant dining today. Brian is going to cook some chicken on the grill along with steamed carrots in foil and potato salad. Dessert will be some fruit and the 2 remaining cookies from home. I would imagine that will all be accompanied by some wine.

Brian was able to work on reservations for the Labrador part of the trip now that we have a confirmed itinerary. Looking forward at the weather, I managed to rebook a boat trip we had planned for Sunday (it’s supposed to rain) and moved it to Monday instead.

Three out of the 4 campsites are occupied. Obviously we aren’t the only people who like out of the way places to stay. Sure beats a Walmart parking lot. We have all the services, water, electric and sewer and the site is flat. We have had to level the vehicle a lot more than usual on this trip. It determines how the fridge and pantry door open and whether water flows to or away from the drain in the bathroom. Not too mention sleeping! When a site isn’t flat, we have to get out our levellers and then figure which wheels to put them under and how high. It’s not an exact science.

From our campsite. Hard to capture all the wildflowers. There are cormorants, gulls, and common terns out on the water.
