Day 1: home to Dover, VT

We took our time leaving home this morning so we could enjoy one  last soak in the hot tub with our morning coffee. We only had freezer and refrigerator food to pack up. Everything else was ready to go.

I picked some herbs from the garden and took a few photographs. The oakleaf hydrangea was cooperative by blooming before we left on our trip. The roses in our front yard have been showcasing themselves for two weeks now. The yellow canna lilies also bloomed this week. At this time last year,  we had already been gone for a month and missed everything.

One final check of the house and we were out the door by 9 am.

Google promised us a leisurely 4 and a half-hour drive to southern Vermont where we will spend the weekend with friends.

What was meant to be a breezy 4-state hop (PA, NJ, NY, VT) turned into a grand tour of 6 states, including unexpected visits to CT and MASS. Talk about a scenic route!

Our journey turned into a whopping 7-hour adventure. An accident on Hwy 87 North forced us to take a Google recommended detour east across construction-laden Hwy 84. The chosen Google  route north towards Vermont in New York state had a strict ‘no trucks, campers, or RVs allowed’ policy, adding another layer of complexity necessitating driving 75 miles further than we needed to go.

The last hour took us through scenic and very hilly country. There is a reason it’s called Vermont.

Here’s hoping that our travel woes aren’t a sign of things to come for the rest of our journey. Fingers crossed for smoother roads ahead!

We will be here until Sunday when I will make my next post and the drive through Maine towards New Brunswick.
