June 27 Manitoba Agriculture Museum (Austin, MN) to Kenora, ON (Anicinabe RV Park)

Last night there was a thunderstorm around 10 pm. It didn’t produce much in the way of rain and a light shower around 6 am. Nothing that hindered our ability to pack up and get underway. The rain is badly needed here.

Destination tonight is Kenora, ON. We closed the loop on the western driving circle just west of the Ontario border. We back tracked to Kenora along highway 17.

Between the construction and the heavy rain we encountered for most of today’s travel, there is not much to talk about today as we were mainly retracing steps we took on the way out. The drive around Winnipeg was just painful.

BTW, on this part of Canada there are 2 seasons, Winter and Construction.

It was startling how fast we traveled from our Prairie field of last night to the rock and trees of Northern Ontario, almost a completely different world in the time span of 2 1/2 hours.

We had a lovely lunch in Keewatin, ON on the outskirts of Kenora. It was still raining off and on so we used the time to do some shopping before heading to our campsite for tonight: Canadian Tire for propane canisters and Firestarter and also vehicle levelers. We have resisted buying levelers because we don’t often need them and they take up storage space. Recently however we have had some issues with unlevel campsites. Someone, very early in the trip left behind in one of our campsites 2 smalls lengths of 2×4 that we have been using when needed, but recently they have been inadequate… so we bit the bullet and bought real ones. We will leave the 2×4s at tonight’s campsite if anyone wants them, even if just to burn in the fire ring. We also replenished the wine cellar and the food cupboards. We still have 8 nights of camping left on the trip out of the 14 remaining. Hard to believe it’s almost over.

We are staying in Anicinabe RV park situated on Golf Club Bay on Lake of the Woods (LotW). I mentioned in my blog on the first time through here that Lake of the Woods had always been someplace I wanted to visit. The campground is operated by the municipality and very nicely located.

It stopped raining about 3 pm. Once we got into camp we did some van clean up. I even found the cap to a screw on one of my shoe racks that fell off about 2 weeks ago. It had fortunately fallen into the electrical system cupboard, a place I try not to go into unless I need to. That put the shoe rack back into business.

Tomorrow we start the part of the trip and the scenery we have both been wanting to see for a very long time, the lake Superior route of the TransCanada highway. This takes us south from Kenora towards Fort Francis and the International Falls area. Then east through Wawa, Sudbury, North Bay and back to Ottawa. That will take us 8 more nights.

In Ottawa, we are meeting our travel buddies who will travel with us for the last week: spending 1 night in Ottawa, 3 nights at our daughter’s country home in Eastern Quebec and 2 nights near Kingston, ON and the Thousand Islands. Back home on July 11th.

Sitting here in our campsite on LotW enjoying the view and the sound of children (who are now out of school) playing down by the water. We have our very own deer, just like home.
