June 10 Prince Rupert BC to Port Hardy BC via BC Ferries

Very early start today as we needed to be at the Ferry dock by 5:30 am. Our campsite, such as it was, was only 5 minutes away. We packed day packs the night before. We had time to make coffee in the ferry parking lot before embarking.

Not many people on board today. We made reservations in late April thinking it might be busier. We rented a cabin on board, the equivalent of a small hotel room with 2 beds, bedding and towels and a full bathroom with shower. We fully intend to take advantage of it.

It was cool, cloudy and foggy as we left port but by 10 am it had all burned off and she far, by noon, is a beautiful sunny day. Just what we asked for.

Inbound ferry from either Alaska or Haida Guai waiting to dock in Prince Rupert.

This is our route today

Our ferry… state of the art.. is more like a floating hotel.
16 hours of this….
And this….

One of our daughters is doing a fundraising walk for cancer research this weekend. The whole family is engaged in helping her complete her quota of 75,000 steps for the weekend. By noon, my husband and I completed 6000 steps each walking around the ferry decks. We’ll do another 6 000 steps later. I think we have the best view! Nice to be able to do a family activity together even though we are more than 3000 miles away.

And an occasional waterfall…
… or two.
Waterfalls from the still snow topped mountains

About an hour north west of Bella Bella
Once in a while a boat….
… or two.
Maybe an island amongst the hundreds.

We did see two humpback whales! We’ve also sern American Bald eagles. We are calling thus our Alaska cruise as it takes the same route as the cruise ships and years ago we ferried from Skagway, AK to Haines AK not that far from Prince Rupert.

Just enjoying a glass of white wine and a snack on the rear deck. After dinner I’ll take a shower before we dock. We haven’t spent a lot of time in our cabin which is as it should be.

Rear deck. Covered. With tables and seating and the best scenery on the planet.

Unloading at Bella Bella. Docking, unloading, reloading etc took an hour. It is an absolutely gorgeous evening. And it will still be light in the sky when we dock in Port Hardy at 10:50 pm.
View from ferry at Bella Bella. The pretty side.

Will we have sunset over the Pacific? Hard to believe that 6 weeks ago we started at the Atlantic Ocean in New York City. We have gone from the Atlantic Ocean in the east, to James Bay in northern Ontario and the Pacific Ocean in British Columbia… and we haven’t done Atlantic Canada. Sounds like next year’s trip to me. Montreal to St. John’s, Newfoundland and try to include Labrador. Ok, 2024.. planned!

Tomorrow we will have been gone 6 weeks. Our little van continues to delight and amaze us. We have our daily tasks down to a fine art! It’s still neet and tidy. I have finished 2 hand work projects including a quilt and probably the ugliest blanket I have ever crocheted ( using up old sock yarn) and done my daily blog. My husband has done his NY Times crossword puzzles every day, done hours and hours of research to find places to camp and visit, and kept the van running in tiptop shape. It’s been marvelous! I could really get used to this!

Sunset over the Pacific Ocean

. It was a very long, very beautiful day! Will be glad to get into bed. It’s almost midnight.

Timeline June 10, 2023. 16 1/2 hours.
‘Parking lot’ campsite, Port Hardy. It provided a place to sleep 5 minutes from the ferry. That’s about all I can say about it.
