June 8 Prince George BC to Tyhee Lake Provincial Park, Telkwa, BC

Today officially starts the second half of our trip. We really enjoyed the 4 days/5 nights in Prince George with family. Now we will explore the rest of British Columbia.

We have rearranged our schedule somewhat as we have decided to skip the time we had originally set aside for the City of Vancouver to spend more time on the Island of Vancouver and get over to Pacific Rim National Park ( which is totally booked campsite wise but we have found other places to camp). My husband has been very busy booking out the next 2 weeks of reservations now that we have finalized (more or less) our plans for the return trip. Also a few recommendations from my brother-in-law who knows this part of the country very well has helped us.

This is a travel day and we were up and out of the campsite by 8:30 am. Sunny and warm morning finally. We had a heart stopping moment about 20 minutes outside of Prince George when a black bear ran across the road. Some quick maneuvers on the road avoided a collision with it, it was that close! About another half hour later, we spotted two young moose feeding in a small pond off the side of the road. Yay… saw moose…

My turn to take the wheel mid-morning. Interesting driving today. Although we are still on HWY 16, part of the TransCanada system towards Prince Rupert, it’s a 2 lane hwy, lots of small construction projects and little towns to drive through. Staying on cruise was a challenge. Not a hwy to make time on.

Some cattle farming still in this area and rolling hills until we reached Houston, BC when the next set of coastal mountains came into view. This is indeed beautiful country.

First view of the coastal mountains.

By noon hour, the temperatures had reached into the 80s, the first time since we left home 5 1/2 weeks ago. It was hot when we reached our campsite about 2:30. I took a nap.

Today’s drive from Prince George to Telkwa,BC and Tyhee Provincial Park

Out campground tonight is on Tyhee Lake just up the hill from the village of Telkwa not far from the more major town of Smithers that we will drive through tomorrow.

A walk to the beach just before dinner… and now our sundowners in camp. We are eating Bison steak tonight that we bought in Birds Hill as we were leaving Winnipeg. Cryovac of course.

Tyhee Lake Provincial Park

Just going to post some photos of the roadside scenery and the flora in the campsite.

The dandelions have gone to seed. They have their own beauty don’t you think? They aren’t in MY lawn.
Poof! And they’re gone.
Google Lens identified this as dogwood.
Wild roses. They are everywhere out here right now.
