May 6: Hamilton, ON

Go-cart Race Day

It turns out, fortuitously, that we have timed our visit to include our almost 17 year old grandson Aaron’s first go cart race of the season. This is his second year of racing.

I don’t normally blog about family members, but I have Aaron’s permission to chronicle this. The racetrack is in Hamilton, ON near the airport at Mount Hope.

The weather has finally decided to cooperate. It’s a lovely sunny but breezy day. This is first for us. We’ve done baseball, track and field, and soccer with other grandchildren and swimming and skiing with our own lot. Curling and archery are other grandchildren activities that we have not been able to participate in unfortunately. Now we get to experience go cart racing!

Bigs and littles.. the little guys need pillows to reach the pedals… so cute!
The 7+ age group heading to the track.

Aaron … no. 86 for his first practice run

And he’s off for a few practice laps. The rest is just watching them go .. round and round… for the next 2 hours! Should be fun when they actually race.

Apparently the heats are grouped by body weight, not age or experience. They are seeded within the heat by weight also. They are awarded points and the points from 2 qualifying heats determine where they qualify for the actual race which is spiral seeded for starting position.

Practice done, check. Driver’s meeting done, check. Now time for the real thing…. number 70. First in this heat because he is the lightest. He will start last in the second qualifying heat. Not the best of places.

Starting in 7th position for the actual race, he finished 3rd. He’s the one in the sun glasses. Some very good driving Aaron!

It is a beautiful day! Sunny and warm. Tonight… Guardians of the Galaxy at the cinema.

Trillium! The trillium is the provincial flower and the woods here are full of them!

Trillium grandiflorium

The perfect end to a wonderful day!
