Day 8 and 9: Okefenokee Swamp

We had no network in this campsite and wifi only at the ranger station.

We have been here before so I will refer you to previous blog posts about this park and ecological references.

We are here 1 year and 1 month later than last year. There are very few birds this year as opposed to last. We’ve seen red shouldered hawks, a swallow tail Kite, great blue heron, egrets, cat birds, mockingbirds, pileated and red headed woodpeckers, an osprey ( rarely seen here) and vultures. No bitterns, ibises or sand hill cranes… and alligators of course.

We repeated the ranger guided boat tour of the swamp both mornings. It rained one afternoon making everything wet and dirty again.

We’ve had opportunity to use our small screened bug shelter and have determined that it is a lot more stable in the wind than it looks. Not good in the rain as the water pools in the small roof, but it’s not designed for rain in any case. It’s big enough for our 2 chairs and 2 TV trays with room to spare. The gnats are not evident this year but there are a few mosquitos and larger flying insects.

The weather has been cool in the mornings warming up with the sun. Nice weather for sleeping. All in all this is a beautiful place!
