Bird sightings: bald eagle, crows, vultures, cormorants, mallards, coots, brown Pelican
Continuing our drive south keeping to the eastern shore as best we can. It’s not a direct drive due to the geography and all the water.
We crossed the Chesapeke Bay via the bridge / tunnel I wrote about last year in my blog so I won’t repeat it again. The previous blog post also has photos and a description of the area around the campsite. https://weegtravel.blog/2022/03/08/day-18-19-to-home/
The DelMarVa agriculture is mainly potatoes and grain crops along with major poultry industries. Driving south we are now into cotton and the start of the pine tree farms.
We stopped for a picnic lunch in the waterfront park at New Byrne, NC whose main claim to fame is its prominence in the Revolutionary War and the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. It never ceases to amaze what we find when we stop along the way.

New Bern itself is a picturesque town dotted with painted fiber glass bears, both standing and on all 4s. It was originally settled by a group of Swiss from Bern, Switzerland and of course has likewise adopted the bear as its icon.

The drive from New Bern to the Carolina State Park was through fairly built up areas, Jacksonville and Wilmington so the last 2 hours were a little slow. Not much in the way of campsites here and this one is almost full. We are in a tent site rather than a van site. Our parking area is too narrow to use the side door to get to the usable parts of the site necessitating us to use the back doors instead. It works, more or less.

I brought a quilt with me to hand quilt ( for the first time ever). Let’s see how that goes. 😏
