FO 76 – Day 1 – Gifford Pinchot State Park

We are still working on ways to improve storage and functionality in our Road Trek Zion. This is our 4th long trip other than family / weekend trips since we purchased it exactly a year ago. LNeither one of us like clutter and the living space is small.

We still had not used the table that came with the van. The support pole was in an inaccessible place in a cupboard and the rectangular top not the right shape. My husband came up with the brilliant idea to move the pole to a better location and replace the rectangular unusable, for us, top with a round cutting board. Now we have a multi-use table top and more space in the cupboard the support pole came out of.

I was still looking for better ways to set up charging stations. I am a tech junkie. As you know from my previous blogs, I also like to sew. I created hanging cloth baskets for cords and gadgets and set them up so everything can USB charge while we travel and not be in the way or fall out of cupboards.

If it works as hoped, I will be delighted

The third significant modification was the addition of a blackout curtain for the rear window on the driver’s side. The accordion window covering ceased to function a while ago. Fixing it was going to be costly so out with the sewing machine again. I used the same quilt scrap leftovers from the pillowcases i made and used for the charging basket. I sewed enough scraps together to cover the window, lined it with some black cloth and put a pocket on the bottom to hold my glasses and my ear buds! Obviously this is my side of the bed. I used a velcro strip across the top as an attachment. It’s not a permanent fixture and doesn’t require a curtain rod. Fortunately the screen part of the original covering still functions.

Very happy with this solution. Glasses and ear buds fit nicely in the little pocket without adding too much weight. The velcro strip across the top allows me to take it down and store with our other blackout curtains.

It’s now summer so no winter clothes are needed.. more space gained and I have also figured out a space saving way to carry bedding. We never travel with the bed made up.

We left home just before noon today. We didn’t have far to go, a state park just south of York, PA. This park is on a dammed up lake. Built in the 60s it reminds us of the Ontario campgrounds we camped at in our early days when we still had a 9×9 canvas tourist tent and a very small car.

As usual now when we travel in the van, it is very hot… well into the 90s. Our campsite is close to the lake but doesn’t seem to help with heat. Why am I always complaining about the heat? It’s our first hot weather. I should be enjoying it. 😉

Tomorrow we visit our first FO 76 site and civil war national park, Harper’s Ferry.

One of the craftable items in FO76 is a decrepit picnic table. I think they used the one in this campsite as the model. Totally unsafe.
