Day 18, 19 to home

Today and tomorrow are travel days.

We are avoiding Washington. DC by taking Hwy 58 East through Norfolk, VA across the Chesapeake Bay – Tunnel and up the DelMarVa peninsula. This funky sandpit is traversed by 3 states, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

Gas prices continue to rise today. I don’t know if it’s state specific, brand specific or location/ competition but the price change is definitely related to global events.

The 7Eleven outside of Norfolk whete we stopped for milk at noon was charging a whopping $4.29 for unleaded regular. ExxonMobil in the same area was $4.19. One hour later, we stopped for lunch, and 10 miles up the road ExxonMobil was $4.29. Virginia Beach $4.15 – $4.29.

Has the news of a possible embargo on Russian oil hit the gas pumps already? Prices seem to change by the hour.

Norfolk is a waterfront city in southeastern Virginia. It’s home to Naval Station Norfolk, a massive naval base on Chesapeake Bay.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel is a 17.6-mile bridge–tunnel crossing at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, the Hampton Roads harbor, and nearby mouths of the James and Elizabeth rivers in the U.S. state of Virginia

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge (also known locally as the Bay Bridge) is a major dual-span bridge in the U.S. state of Maryland. Spanning the Chesapeake Bay, it connects the state’s rural Eastern Shore region with the urban Western Shore, between Stevensville and the capital city of Annapolis. The original span, opened in 1952 and with a length of 4.3 miles (6.9 km), was the world’s longest continuous over-water steel structure.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel.. the entire system is a series of bridges and tunnels. Expand the photo to see where the bridge ends and the next tunnel begins. Very impressive!

The Delmarva Peninsula, or simply Delmarva, is a large peninsula on the East Coast of the United States, occupied by the vast majority of the state of Delaware and parts of the Eastern Shore regions of Maryland and Virginia. The peninsula is 170 miles long.

Our last night. We have a reservation at Kiptopeke State Park in the Virginia on the tip of Delmarva.

Sand beach at the tip of Delmarva looking west.

The weather is definitely cooler here but nice enough to sit outside for a bit with a cold drink and a walk to the beach. This area is noted for its raptors, osprey and bald eagles. We spotted Pelicans, gulls and grebes out in the water. The local wildlife are the 3 cats in the camper next to us.

Travel tomorrow could be interesting as snow is predicted at home. We are hoping we can get away without winterizing for a couple of days. We have started packing up… ie the chairs have been broken down and stored. Everything is inside tonight to keep it dry. Much easier to deal with once we get home.

It is now Wednesday and we are on the road. It will be raining the whole way with possible snow by the time we get home.. sigh. We have been fortunate with weather actually… only 2 days of rain overall and both of them travel days.

So far gas prices haven’t changed since yesterday, at least in this part of VA. As we drove north prices ranged from $4.23 to $4.29. Gas prices closer to home… a whopping $4.45!!

All in all it was a great vacation. Restful but busy enough at the same time and we found the warmer weather we needed.
