Day 19 | Tetons to Yellowstone

Yesterday’s rain gave us snow on the mountains. It is cold and clear this morning. Hopefully I can get better views as we drive today. We move today from our shared unit with friends to West Yellowstone traveling in caravan. We have 4 nights there together as well.

Carolyn and I played Connect 4 at Dornans.
Windy point pullout, Grand Teton, NP.. looks like an ad doesn’t it?

A stop at Jackson Lake dam showed the effect of the drought in the west. The reward took the form of several eagles soaring high and a small flock of trumpeter swans in the air. The change in the weather has reduced the wind providing a photographic ecstacy of reflections.

Jackson Lake… must be down at least 20 feet

View in Yellowstone just north of the south gate

We stopped for a grab ‘n go lunch at Flagg Ranch just south of the south gate. We knew were pretty close to the snow line. As we climbed into the park, we reached it. It looks like Christmas! And it’s only September 20th. It sure looks different than when we passed through here 4 days ago.

Geothermals at Old Faithful

We stopped at the Old Faithful visitor center for a pit stop. We have seen Old Faithful before so we didn’t see a need to view it again. Due to the drought it is only reaching 1/3 of its normal height. I just took a photo of some geothermal pools on the way in. There is still bridge construction going on so traffic was a bit chaotic and still lots of tourists.

We still have yet to see any wildlife other than the birds we saw this morning and a bull elk in the Tetons that was running away from us. Nothing at all in Yellowstone. The mystery of where all the animals are continues.

In Yellowstone itself, between the South Gate and West Yellowstone we crossed the Continental Divide 3 times. The CD forms part of the boundary between Idaho and Montana.

We have reached our destination in West Yellowstone having driven through a bit of rain and some white stuff. Right now it is precipitating something that resembles small bouncy Styrofoam balls… intriguing until it turned to graupel.
