Day 18 | Tetons, NP day 2

Backyard moose cow and calf

After the rain yesterday afternoon this morning looks a little wetter. It is incredibly dry here. Part of the park is an Elk Preserve and they should almost be in rut by now.  We usually see herds of them but haven’t spotted anything yet on this trip. Is it too warm/ dry and they haven’t come down yet?

This moose cow and her calf must live in this neighborhood.

The moon last night was glorious, almost full. We are out exploring again with cameras. Maybe after the rain the animals will come out. Fingers crossed.

Autumn colors on Gros Ventre road

The Gros Ventre Slide

In 1925 a massive Rick slide created a natural dam on the Gros Ventre R and made a lake. Two years later the dam broke flooding farms and the village of Kelly killing 6 people.

The Gros Ventre Slide.
Gros Ventre Valley… there are animals –  horses and cattle. The Tetons are almost obscured by clouds.

Our favorite bison 🦬 place without the bison

With bad weather coming in and no animals anywhere in sight, we decided to pack it in for the day. All 4 of us have been on the road for more than 2 weeks and an afternoon relaxing, getting caught up with personal things and downloading photos sounded appealing.

It is indeed mystifying (to us anyway) where all the animals have disappeared to. Yesterday afternoon we spotted a small heard of pronghorn too far away to shoot. This morning we found a single pronghorn male, one lone female mule deer, a flock of ravens on the flats and a redtailed hawk. No bison or elk anywhere to be found.
