Day 17 | Grand Tetons, NP

Moose calf

We left our unit at 8 am in search of something to photograph.  Just around the corner, still in the village we found a moose cow and calf feeding. I thought I had a deer problem at home. I can’t imagine having moose in my backyard. Photos of mom and baby in my camera. They are a lot darker in color than eastern moose unless it’s the time of year. Does their coat change?

We are driving our favorite road to find moose. We usually have it to ourselves. This morning it is chock a block with traffic. We have never seen this before at this time of year.

We managed to get to Mormon Row with less traffic. Mormon Row is where a group of Mormon Settlers were given homesteads via the Homestead Act. These buildings are iconic for the park. The land was good here for farming because of the high concentration of bentonite clay. Bentonite clay holds moisture. It’s also used pharmaceutically for things like calamine lotion.

Iconic Mormon barn

We stopped for coffee with a beautiful view of the Tetons sadly lacking the glaciers now.

View of the Tetons from our coffee break.

Clear skies this morning and minimal haze. Haze comes with wind later in the morning / early afternoon.

Coffee with friends at Dornan’s
Oxbow Bend 2021, our favorite scenic spot. No reflections due to the wind but the clouds are magnificent.
Cunningham Cabin
The Snake River
Schwabachers landing… there is a wedding happening in the clump of trees to the right. We have seen 3 brides so far here. Can you imagine a more perfect backdrop for wedding photos?
Beaver dam at Schwabachers Landing
Same spot as the beaver dam but in the other direction. There were 2 weddings taking place here.

We have been watching the clouds build up all afternoon and now it is raining. Not much in the way of wildlife today but as usual the scenery is exquisite.

Lunch was sandwiches at Dornan’s again. A great outdoor adventure center near the park main entrance… food, mountaineering and bike rentals etc. Lots of  outdoor enthusiasts here! Fun place.

We drove through Jackson on our way back to our unit. Reminds me of Banff, Alberta.

Raining hard now. Most rain we’ve seen since Indiana almost two weeks ago.

After a spectacular day we are relaxing in our unit catching up on emails, organization  work, downloading photos along with wine and cheese. Tomorrow is rainy. Maybe the animals will come out. Great to be together with dear friends again.

Btw, we don’t see many class B RVs in the East but there are a lot of them out here. Yesterday we spotted more than half a dozen Roadtreks on our travels.
