Okay.. these magnificent views from our ‘bedroom’ window continue. This morning we had a beautiful sunrise… no getting up before dawn to chase sunrise miles. Magpies and starlings are early morning feeders.

We have decided to go back to the Buffalo Bill Centre of the West in Cody and view the raptors. Entry allows two days.

These raptors are amazing. They have to stay in captivity because they cannot survive in the wild due to their injuries. They live twice as long in captivity. I did not know that birds don’t have bladders so it’s on demand empty as we all are familiar with. As wild life photographers we are familiar with the ‘poop and fly’ phenomenon

There is a wonderful quilt shop in town, Friends and Co., so of course we made a side trip. I am only buying fat quarters. And I only buy as many as I can fit in two hands.

Having done our ‘chores’ in Cody, we headed out of town and ended up in our next campsite for lunch. It is a little more protected from the wind than last night. The weather is changing. The air is much less clear and it’s cloudy.

We are only 20 miles from Yellowstone so we headed up the Shoshone Canyon in search of wildlife. We are following the Shoshone River and the canyon landscape is spectacular, being on the eastern side of the caldera it is of course volcanic.
We drove to the East Gate of Yellowstone and a few miles beyond just so we could say ‘we made it’. Our campsite, Wapiti Campground’ in Shoshone National Forest is the most rustic so far. We do have electricity but no water and there is no dumping station which complicates things a little bit.
Tomorrow we meet the friends we have traveled the globe with in Jackson, WY and will spend the next 7 days with them divided between the Tetons and Yellowstone. We have done this with them several times but have never driven it from the east. We won’t be using the van so tomorrow morning we need to winterize before it sits unused for a few days at sub freezing temperatures at night. Since we dumped this morning, our tanks are empty and we can’t use the onboard water because there are no dumpstations in this campground … oh well, the vault toilets are clean at least and the walk won’t hurt us either.
Interesting thing… this is bear country and nothing can be left out that has food in it or smells of food. Each campsite has a ‘bear box’ which is where we have put the BBQ for the night. These campsites are rated for ‘hard sided’ vehicles rather than tents.l
