Another gorgeous morning but very cool. The egg bites were delicious for breakfast. I will add these to my camping meals repertoire.
Our campsite is right at the entrance to the Devils tower national monument with a beautiful view of it this morning. The movie ‘Close encounters of a third kind’ was filmed here. They show it every night!
Once we leave this campsite, we may not have wifi or cell service until we get to Cody on Thursday or Yelloestone on Friday. I will continue to blog but may not be able to publish it until then.
The trip across interstate 90 to Sheridan was mind-numbingly long rolling hills and grasslands. Just west of Devils Tower we came across oil rugs in the fields and we followed a pipeline for quite a long time. Near Gilette there is an open pit coal mine adjacent to a coal burning electricity producing facility that claims to have state of the art non-polluting processes.
We were pleasantly surprised to see herds of pronghorn antelope in the wild… or rather mixed in with the cattle. I still haven’t been able to photograph them yet.
We stopped for lunch at the rest area in Sheridan, very close to the Montana border. I have been driving all morning but switched drivers because the rest of the trip to Bighorn is very hilly and twisty… and hopefully treed as we get into the hills. The temperature is a pleasant 75F. This is the day we climb. Hwy 14 from Sheridan to Greybull is the original overland stagecoach/ pony express route. Those horses must have had quite a rough climb!

If I had to describe Wyoming I would have to say, at this time of year, it’s yellow with the occasional red outcrops. At times the highway paving was red.. must be the aggregate they used. Assessing the vehicles on the interstate I would say the majority are RVs of every shape, size and category followed by trucks (pickups and transports) then motorbikes and cars.

This is a beautiful campground on a lake. We are at 8 000′ alt to it will be cold tonight. I have pulled out my quilts for the chairs. We will need a campfire for sure!

We spoke with a couple from Missouri who have been here several times and told us where we would be likely to spot / photograph moose tomorrow. 😀 fingers crossed.
So, given that the temperature was predicted to drop to 39F, we settled inside for a movie downloaded to my laptop before we left and hot chocolate and popcorn for dessert. We brought the milk frother ( such luxury) with us for our lattes but it also makes great hot chocolate without messing up a pot.
We also brought a small electric heater with us to use instead of using our on board propane for the installed heater. It worked just fine, heating up this small space nicely and quickly. We didn’t sleep with it on… our doubled bagged bedding system with winter and summer sides is wonderful.
