The morning view of the river from the back of our camper welcomed us to a beautiful morning. We enjoyed our morning coffee sitting down by the river followed by a walk. Thus area is noted for bald eagles and we saw several in the distance over the water. Gavin’s Point Dam creates the beautiful water recreation areas and parkland where we camped last night.
We spent an hour or so walking the historic district of Yankton, hometown to Tom Brokaw, and walked halfway back across the Missouri R. On the footbridge. I was also interested in finding the quilt blocks on the buildings once used for a tour map of the town.

.. and I couldn’t resist the quilt shop which happened to be right next to the knitting store. I bought some fabric just because.

The surprise of the day was this spotting of the American White Pelican at our lunch stop on a dammed up river. We don’t have our wildlife photography equipment handy yet, so these are cropped images from my phone.

As we go west, we appear to be leaving the corn and soybeans behind and moving to sorghum, grassland and cattle.
The afternoon drive was uneventful.. more of the same.
We are camped again on the banks of the Missouri R. In Chamberlain SD at the American Creek Campground. We were assigned a riverside site but the wind is so strong we asked for another site where we could use the vehicle as a windbreak. This us the second day in a row with strong winds. We haven’t been able to put out the awning. Our chairs are light so I have to turn them upside down or they blow away.

Wildlife spotting: nuthatch, bald eagles, American White Pelican, terns, plovers, redtail hawk, Northern Turkey Vulture
